World Junior Championships,
15 - 20 August, Beijing

Randwick Botany Harriers had 2 representatives at World Junior Championships in Beijing.
Tara Holt was selected to represent Australia in 100m hurdles while Lara Tamsett was selected for 3000m.
Both girls performed wery well in the lead-up to this competition. Tara lowered her PB down to 14.24 which is equal club record. Lara ran a PB of 9:27.0 for 3000m and also 1500m PB in 4:22.87.
Tara was first one to compete at World Juniors on August 17 running Heat1. After very good start she finished in 7th place with time of 14.50 and didn't progress to final.

In girls 3000m there were not many competitors and it organizers dicaded to have a straight final.
The race was not only very tactical but also conditions were not favourable for distance running (31 deg).
First kilometer was covered in 3:08.46, pretty slow considering that fastest girl in the race has got PB of 8:42.
Second kilometer was touch faster - 3:03. Everything unfolded in the last kilometer which winner Veronika Wanjiru covered in amazing 2:51.3.
Lara ran very well and finished 11th with new PB of 9:25.13 which is new club U20 record.

Full results of 100m hurdles and 3000m are shown below.

NEW Road Relays 2006, Wollongong, 5th August

Randwick Botany Harriers was very successful at NSW road relays in Wollongong on Saturday 5th August.
Both, open men and woman won this prestige event with some very fast performances. The weather wasn't kind to runners especially in the beginning of competition.
First to compete were U16 girls: Kristy Colman, Lucy Stewart, Madeline Lamond and Selma Kajan. They all run well and won their age group with only 43 seconds behind very strong U18 Sutherland team.
Next race was basically dominated by girls in blue and gold. Liz Miller posted 13:35 opener for open woman while Lauren McKillop ran very fast time of 14:07 to start off U20 girls.
Greta Truscott ran solid second leg for open women, followed by fast improving Lara Nicod. Jenny Dallaway finished very fast in 13:33 despite being sick earlier this week.
U20 girls had a probably the run of the day, Amy Neville kept the lead with her 14:30, Alexis McKillop posted impressive 14:01 and to finish it off Rebecca Lowe posted the fastest time among our girls - brilliant 13:32.
There were some late changes in male teams just before the start of the race. Jeff Farrelly swopped with Nick Cope and ran first leg for Open A team while Nick was running first leg for Open B team. Both of them ran very well, Jeff did 12:01 and Nick was little bit faster, unofficially 11:47. I guess we could afford this little experiment.
Bradley Woods was flying on his second leg - unofficially 11:25, fastest run among our boys, followed by also impressive 11:32 by Jeff Hunt and 11:30 by Jeremy Roff.
If anything these relays prove that we can get coaches running when it comes to the crunch. As we were short for couple of runners (I heard that Shane Fazl was in hospital), Ken Green offered to run the second leg in Open B team and Sean Williams ran, believe it or not, third leg in Open B team and few minutes later fourth leg in 35+ B team. You can't give better example to athletes - well done coaches. 35+ Men team end up with a bronze medal, well done Mohammed, Brenden, Peter and Jim. Unofficial results are available further down on this page while official results will be available at NSW Athletics website soon.

Liz Miller - 13:35
Greta Truscott - 14:41
Lara Nicod - 14:12
Jenny Dallaway - 13:33

The venue is Flagstaff Point in Wollongong and the relays are on Saturday, 5th August, starting at 12 o'clock with youngest categories. Course map and timetable are available here.
The relay teams consist of 4 members (they all must be registered with club) and are mainly 4x4km events, with some younger age-groups being 4x2km and 4x3km events.
They are a great opportunity to race with a team from you age group or ability level- eg there are junior age group teams, veterans age group teams, plus open graded teams (eg A teams, B teams, C teams, etc).
The club is currently in the process of taking nominations for the teams. We hope to enter as many teams as possible so that all runners interested in competing can do so.

The basic procedure to follow is:
For those coached by a club coach (Sean Williams, Mick Little, Ken Green) let them know of your availability to compete. They will then contact the relevant team managers. For those who are coached by other coaches (or who are uncoached), please notify the relevant team manager of your availability to compete. Please tell us about some of your recent running achievements. It would also save the team managers time if those who are not available to compete could let them know so that they don't have to follow up with further emails, phone calls etc.

KBC Nacht - Heusden(BEL), Youcef Abdi smashed NSW record

Saturday, July 22, 2006
The big news from Heusden (Belgum) is that Youcef Abdi smashed the 30 years old NSW 3000m SC record.
He posted 8:21.98 which is more then 4 seconds better than old record and one of the fastest Australian times in history. Not far off Shaun Creighton's Australian record - 8:16.22. This is also better then world championships A qualifier (8:24.60).

IAAF Golden Gala - Roma(ITA), Youcef Abdi 13th

Friday, July 14, 2006
An impressive solo effort following the heels of the designated pacemakers brought Olympic bronze medallist Paul Kipsiele Koech of Kenya a sub-8mins clocking of 7:59.94, second only to World champion Saif Saaeed Shaheen’s 7:56.32 in Athens on 3 July. In 5th was an American record for USA’s Daniel Lincoln, his time of 8:08.82 improving on Henry Marsh’s ancient mark of 8:09.17 established back in 1985. Youcef Abdi was 13th with 8:29.95 which is 3.7 sec off the NSW record (and club record) held by Tony Manning.

World School Games 2006, Thesalloniki

Sunday, 2nd July

At the 800m final Selma Kajan finished 5th in 2:12.04. She was leading at 600m mark (1:34) and was on target for another personal best time but got overtaken by 3 girls with 180m to go and then faded badly in the last 100m. Obviously the qualifying run took its toll.
