State Relays, Day 1

First day of State Relays was very successful for our club. We entered 12 teams for a day but had to scratch two Men 160+ sprinting teams.
The club tent with a banner was set at southern side of the track. Brining up the tent proved to be good decision as light rain welcomed everyone this morning at Rooty Hill track.

The first to run were our “boys” in Men 4x1500m 160+ team. Glen Derriman ran a brilliant first leg in 4:50 to finish in 4 th place, Martin Considine followed with very good 4:27 run, Jim Dawes not to be outdone ran even paced 4:26 and by that time the team was coming second behind Sydney Striders. Dimitri Kontopos had a little bit of conservative start but his kick finish in last 300m got him 4:28 run. The silver medal brought some positive atmosphere among our little crowd under the tent.

Next to run were girls in Open 4x800m race. Last year we came second to Sutherland and girls were expecting tough race. But as the race progressed it was clear that our team was superior. Opening leg by Amy Neville in about 2:19 got our team to second place not far behind UTS Norths. Alexis McKillop made up the ground in solid 2:17 and got our team in front. Her sister Lauren held on the lead passing the baton to Lara Nicod, our fastest runner. Lara cruised home in about 2:14 and our team won about 28 seconds ahead of second placed UTS Norths team.

A team of our U18 boys gave a good crack at 4x400m relay despite the fact that this is not their specialty. Jesse Williams had a very good opener with 53.07. Kevin Hucker was our second runner who started really well but lost a bit of ground in the last 100m. Dean Fahey also tried hard and was looking good for the first 250m but was struggling into the head wind at the home straight. By that time the team was at the back of field and Josh Tassel cruised in about 57 sec. his lap; smart move considering that he was about to run in 4x100m relay afterwards. Our team finished 7 th in 3:41.71.

4x200m Open Women team nearly made a final despite the fact that average age of this tem was under 18 years. And this is the first time they ran together.

Rachel Hardy (long jumper) ran the first leg in about 27.7 followed by very good run of Anna White (26.8). Lara Nicod, who finished her 800 less then 2 hours before, ran close to her PB (25.8) and Latisha Touma brought our team home in 5 th place. Final time of 1:48.71 was just outside the top 8 qualifiers. Well done girls!

4x100 U18 Men relay started with a bit of drama. Initially we entered two teams but because of couple of pullouts we had to put 2 girls in our second team (thanks girls).
10 minutes before start our second runner in team B, Cooper Rawnsley, was still in the car somewhere on the freeway. We decided to put in our third girl, Rachel Hardy, so we are going to run with one boy and three girls. As Rachel was going to the start Cooper jumped the fence and was ready to run without any warm-up. The A team (Jesse Williams, Dean Fahey, James Beaver and Josh Tassell) run a blinder edging off the “Westfields” and won their heat in 43.85 which was second fastest qualifying time. The B team didn't progress to final but all credit to Cooper Rawnsley, Kevin Hucker, Latisha Touma and Anna White for showing team spirit. The A team end up winning silver medal in the final, this time running even faster (43.49) and only 0.38 behind winning Illawong. The boys said they will try to win State title next year as all of them are U17 this year.

The 4x100m Open team was left incomplete on Friday after Damien Kelly had to pull out due to injury. Jason Lincoln was kind enough and agreed to run in this relay but couldn't make it unfortunately. Sprint coach Leo Hollestelle was desperate and asked club President, Jim Dawes (long distance runner), to run and he agreed. I couldn't wait to see that; “Jimbo” starting from the blocks. I was standing next to Max Freeman at the first change and told him not take off like a rocket because Jim is running the first leg. But when race started I saw Kevin Hucker running the first leg. He offered to run at the very last moment and practically kicked out Jim out of the blocks. Not to mention that Kevin already ran one 400m and two 100m races.
First change was good but there was a bit of hesitation on the second and third change. This team has so much more potential but on the day they end up with 44.60 and didn't progress to final.

The long awaited 4x1500m Open Men race was very much-anticipated event because RBH boys were on the mission – another Australian record. They looked good in their flashy new uniforms. Conditions were not that bad, it was cloudy although with light wind. Coach Ken Green said they had to average about 3:49.5 to get the record.
David Byrne, our new club member, ran a fantastic opener. Running behind Sydney University's James Nipperes in the first couple of laps, Dave was on target to run his sub 3:50. I clocked him at 3:48.6. Jeff Hunt was looking good but his first two laps were little bit behind target splits. After second change (halfway) the RBH time was 7:46 and I taught they won't be even close to record. But very gutsy run by Bradley Woods (about 3:45) brought back the possibility of record. Jeremy Roff started with his famous brisk steady pace. He had to pull sub 3:45 run for the record, tuff thing to do on your own running only against the clock. He did try hard and at the bell he was at about 2:45, he would have to run sub 60 sec. last lap. He tried to finish it fast into the head wind but ran just short of record – 15:18.36, only 0.45 off the Australian record. Fantastic effort!

Our B team in the same race started very well with Hary Summers covering first leg in 3:56, not a bad effort for someone who trained in the morning. Hary was running with leading pack for the first two laps. Cane Partridge (4:18), Edward Ovadia (PB 4:23) and Gary Howard (4:27) all ran well and finished in credible 4 th place 1.43 sec off the bronze medal. Well done boys!

And the last race of the day for our club was 4x1500m U16 girls. I must admit, I have a difficulty to get these girls to run in this team. A week ago we had only 2 girls willing to run. Then Vida Robinson, very talented young runner, decided to run. But we were still short of one girl. Without fourth runner nobody can have a run. After lot of discussion between them, Tessa Herbert-Smith decided to give it a go.
And they all had fantastic runs. Rachael Howard ran the first leg in PB time of 4:57.
Tessa smashed her PB as well, first time sub 5 minutes – 4:58. Vida Robinson, despite being little bit sick, had fast (maybe little bit too fast) first lap – 73 seconds. She slowed down a bit on the third lap but then picked up the pace and finished not much off her PB – 5:00. The last runner, Amity Delaney, after running huge PB in State 3000m last week, started off in the brisk pace but managed to hold her form all the way. Her final time of 5:05.7 was incredible 11 sec. PB. The team ended up with well-deserved silver medal and lot of smiles.

State Relays, 15th &
16th November

This year State Relays are to be held on 15th and 16th November. Traditionally, our club participate every year and we urge every member to take a part this year. We also ask coaches to put forward nominations for potential teams. Coaches input is the most valuable information when we try to put teams together and without coaches we can never form best teams. Relay events cover not only track races but also field events.

More details about this competition can be found here.

If you are available to compete please email your confirmation to: relays2008@rbharriers.com or contact Alija Kajan on 0403956477.

Jane Saville
7th at World Race Walking Cup

Cheboksary, Russia, 11th May 2008

Jane Saville walked brilliantly in her 20k at Cheboksary. With season best time of 1:29:27 and under Olympic A qualifier, Jane will most likely now be selected to walk in Beijing. Jane was sitting behind the pack and walked through first 5k in 22:22 and was placed 10th. She picked up a pace and walked second 5k in 22:00 to move up to 6th position. At that point 3 leading girls (all Russians) were nearly 2 minutes ahead. By 15k mark, the third Russian Anisia Kirdyapkina droped off (obviously after her pacemaking duty was finished) and Jane was still holding 6th place. She lost only one place before finishing strongly in 7th place. In the same race Natalie Saville, Jane's sister, finished 37th in 1:36:32. With Claire Woods who came 31st, Australian team was 5th.
Full results are available here.

Kristy Colman 42nd at World Schools cross country

Ždar nad Sazavou, Czech Republic, 24th April 2008

Kristy Colman, in her first international debu, raced in Czech Republic at International School Sports Federation World Cross Country. Kristy came 42nd and was 5th Australian. Full results from that race are available here.

There are also video clips (Kristy can be seen in the third clip) available from this competition available here.

Randwick Botany Harriers wins Endeavour Cup

Miranda Park, 19th April 2008

If you were looking for a tough grassland cross-country course, no fees, plenty of competition and friendly faces and free tea and coffee thrown in then Sutherland AC provided exactly what was for you last Saturday at Miranda Park.

It seemed that RBH decided to send a small elite squad to seize the Endeavour Trophy from our marauding athletic neighbours. There were our nine brave athletes surrounded by 121 Sutherlanders, 81 Illawongians and 74 St. Georgians. Undeterred we deployed our troops wisely. Pocket rocket Raquel Borg (13.31) covered the 2km., Amity Delaney (13.12) and Lucy Stewart (14.47) covered the 3km. Whilst more senior runners Frank Borg (25.50) and Kevin McBrearty (31.02) got stuck in to the 5km. Our super elite “hit squad” of Jim Dawes (32.26), Chris Newton (34.19), Shariff Shockair (34.23) and John McGrath (43.37) took on the heavy work in the 8km.

Excitement was high as the races progressed passing the packed Ivan Curotta Stand. Ivan himself frequently leapt out of his seat with the mounting tension.

How could such a small brigade hold out? Well, this is just one of many historic stories in which outnumbered factions have overcome adversity. Sutherland Tax Accountant Bob Reus worked feverously on his calculator to release the joyous news that Randwick Botany Harriers had won the season's first silverware The Endeavour Trophy . Not since the Battle of Britain have so few overcome so many. Wild celebrations followed and we think that Bob Reus should file our next Tax returns perhaps using his magic calculator.

Many thanks to the girls and guys of RBH who enjoyed this competition and thanks to Sutherland AC for doing a fine job in putting on these races.

Report by Kevin McBrearty

Alexis McKillop selected for World Cross Country Championships

12th March 2008

The news was a little bit unexpected but very pleasant one.
At the new cross country course in Canberra, Alexis McKillop (pictured) ran the race of her life and qualified for upcoming World Cross Country Championships.
Alexis ran a smart race to gradually move up through the field to come 4th, only a narrow margin behind the winner. It will be McKillop's first international vest, much deserved. Harry Summers ran an extremely gutsy race to come 6th in the u/20 boys 8km. Other top ten finishers were Lauren McKillop (7th) and Kristy Colman (8th) in the junior girls race. They will both be eligible in this age group next year, as will Summers.
Jeffrey Hunt, with health problems over the last couple of months, finihsed 19th in the senior race.

Full details about australian team can be found here.

Bradley Woods and Jeremy Roff, medals at Australina Open Championships

1st March 2008

Bradley Woods and Jeremy Roff came second and third in somewhat tactical race at National Championship 1500m in Brisbane. Not very fast splits in the begining made Brad taking a lead in the last lap but he was overtaken by Queenslander Mitch Kealy in the last hundred meters. The battle for third was very exiting and decided after photo finish review. Jeremy Roff pipped Mark Tucker on the line and according to the offical times was 1/100 sec ahead of him.
Lauren McKillop secured bronze medal in 3000m after coming 4th overall (third Australian) in new personal best time.

RBH peformances at National Championshps:
2. Bradley Woods, 1500m, 3:40.91
3. Jeremy Roff, 1500m, 3:42.66
4.(3rd Aus) Lauren McKillop, NSW, 9:45.94
6. Lara Nicod, 800m, 2:07.97
6.(4th Aus) James Roff, 400H, 53.24
6. Alexis McKillop, 3000m, 10:12.66
4/H3 Rebecca Irwin, 400m, 55.52
5/H3 Rebecca Irwin, 200m, 25.11
7. (B race) Rebecca Irwin, 200m, 25.17

Josh Johnson - 3 club records in one week

16th December 2007

Josh Johnson is running very well lately and keeps breaking club's U16 male records. Within 1 week Josh got all three middle distance records. First, in preliminary races at Australian Allschools he ran 800m in 1:58.59. The following day at the same competition he smashed his own (and club) record in 1500m, running very fast 4:02.28. Unfortunatelly this wasn't enough for medal but proved what sort of potential this boy is.
On 13th December he went down to Melbourne to race in famous Zatopek meet. In junior 3000m race (named after Rob De Castela) Josh ran fantastic time of 8:41.00 improving club U16 record for more then 11 seconds.

State Relays - Day 2

NSW State Relay Championships, 18th November 2007

Second day of State Relays continued in hot and humid weather. Randwick Botay Harriers started off with 4x200m man race. Lack of change practice was evident and despite good individual runs our team unfortunatelly didn't manage to progress to final. They finished 7th, 2.65 seconds shy of qualifying mark.

(Left to Right) Tokunbo Olabinri, James Roff, Gary Howard and Dean Taylor

4x800m team was an interesting mix of runners who managed to finish fourth in a very strong competition today.
Edward Ovadia was really in training for 3000m and was obviously lacking a bit of speed. James Roff is very seasoned 400m hurdler but brave enough to have a go over two laps race. James Hurley and especially Tim McGrath have plenty of experience at this distance and one could call them "800m specialists".
In the opening leg James Hurley went through first lap in 56.2 but faded a bit in the second lap, still finishing in top three with 1:59.4. Tim McGrath, with more experience then fitness at the moment, found the race hard especially in the last 50m. Edward Ovadia was next and he negativelly split with 66.6 for first lap and 66.3 for his second lap. James Roff ran very well, maybe little bit too cautious in the first lap (63 seconds) and finishing very strong with 61.7 for his second lap. Top effort by all four.

(Left to Right) Edward Ovadia, Tim McGrath , James Roff, and James Hurley
The highlight of the day for our club was the win in 4x1500m Women Open race. Lauren McKillop, Kristy Colman, Heidi Cayzer and Alexis McKillop clocked 19:28.87 and left behind second placed UTS Norths nearly 42 seconds. Well done girls.

State Relays - Day 1

Australian record in 4x1500m relay for Randwick Botany Harriers

NSW State Relay Championships, 17th November 2007

Randwick Botay Harriers boys were very keen to get new uniforms for this race. It was like they wanted to show something special at these Relay Championships. The target was clear: an Australian 4x1500m record which stands from 1988 in time of 15:19.00. Some people were sceptical about their plan as Bradley Woods came to run this race of very limited preparation. They had to average below 3:50 which is not easy especially in relays where runners basically run solo races.
Jeff Farrelly had a very good opening run with 3:51, coming second behind Nick Bromley of UTS Norths. Jeffrey Hunt ran brilliantly second leg moving our boys in the lead. Then it was Bradley's turn. He didn't disapoint altough he was looking little bit "rough" towards the end. Jeremy Roff was trying hard in the first two laps and it was still uncertain that they will get a record. With a lap to go clock showed 14:19 and he had to produce sub 60 seconds lap in slightly windy conditions. He was delighted when he stopped the clock at 15:17.91 - new Australian record.
(Left to Right) Bradley Woods, Jeffrey Hunt, Jeremy Roff and Jeff Farrelly

In the same race our B team (shown on the left) came 6th adding to complete succes of our club.

(Left to Right) Sean Ryan (17) , Nick Mellick (15),
Tim Mc Grath (24) and Chris Macdonald (18)

The morning session saw our Open Woman 4x800m team coming second behind UTS Norths. This team consisted mostly of our junior runners with the exception of Heidi Cayzer, very expirienced long distance runner.
Amy Neville ran a solid opening leg changing fourth. Heidi, who not long ago ran marathon, had a fantastic run overtaking nearly everyone in the second lap and possibly changed at the same time as UTS Norths team. Alexis McKillop, running of limited preparation (HSC commitments), managed to hold off in second place . At last change, RBH girls were about 20 m behind. Selma Kajan could not close the gap with her 2:13 run against UTS Norths runner Trychelle Kingdom and our team finished 6 seconds behind UTS Norths.

Randwick Botany Harriers at State 3000m Championships

NSW 3000m Championships, 10th November 2007.

Randwick Botay Harriers runners performed brilliantly at this competition. Conditions at Homebush track were perfect, about 19 degres, no wind.
The evening started with woman 3000m Open B race. Our only representative in this race was Rachael Howard who started race pretty fast. Her first km split was indicating nearly half of minute PB; she faded in the last two laps but still managed 3 seconds PB.
Next on the program was woman 3000m Open A race with a big field of 20 runners on the start line. The favourits were reluctant to push the pace hard in the first 3 laps. Lara Tamsett (Sydney University), Chloe Tighe (Campbelltown Colegians) and Nicky Molan (Sydney University) pulled clear after half way. Randwick Botay Harriers girls were running strong, Lauren McKillop just off the pace behind leaders, followed by Amy Neville, Greta Truscott, Kristy Colman and Heidi Cayzer. Selma Kajan was second last at this point.
In the last kilometre Lara Tamsett and Chloe Tighe duo pulled away from Nicky Molan and with 600m to go Tamsett was 10m clear ahead of Tighe and it was looking like former RBH runner had it in the bag. But young Tighe had great finish and won the race in the last 200m, running under World Junior qualifier - 9:28.51. Lara was 2.6 seconds behind and Nicky Molan was clear third in very good time of 9:34.73.
Selma Kajan managed to edge Bridey Delany for fourth place. Greta Truscot, Amy Neville and Heidi Cayzer finished in this order all recording PBs. Lauren McKillop was casualty of her own pacing but finished solid in 10:18 with Kristy Colman running equal PB.

Men 3000m race was massive with 108 runners on the start lists. Athletics NSW had to put five races on.
The first race was great start for what was to be great night for RBH. Young Tim Spehr, aged only 11 and youngest in the field, finished 5th in great time of 10:37 but more important was the fact that he beat his father, Peter Spehr former very good marathon runner. Mohammad Alkhub, still recovering from Chicago Marathon, recorded 10:59.
Next race featured two RBH athletes, Edward Ovadia who ran a PB of 9:36 and young Nicholas Mellick who, I believe, also ran a PB - 9:58.
Races were getting progressively faster and in the third race of the night few runners dipped under 9 minutes. This was only a prelude of the bigger things to come. RBH had 4 runner in this race. The best placed (13th) was Zac Rea who, after running a PB in 800m race earlier (2:06.99), ran a PB over 3000m - 9:12.82. Another brilliant run came from Josh Davies who, aged only 13, recorded very slick time of 9:15.45. Gary Howard had a solid run and Anthony Ognjenovski was again too fast in the first half of the race.
The fourth race (B grade) was already looking very serious. Andrew Knox took the lead after half way and never looked back. He managed to hold off fast finishing 16 years old Tod Wakefield and lowered his PB down to 8:31.37. Another RBH runner, Kamp Christian, had a fantastic run to claim the third place. After learning things or two about pacing, upcoming Harry Summers had a very good run and finished 5th in 8:38.49 ( missed club's U18 record for only 0.12 sec). Tom Hurley, James Hurley and Joshua Johnson (missing club U16 record for 0.7 sec) all ran PBs.

And then it was a time for big boys and some real fast running. The main race had 20 starters, including Jeff Farrelly who had a pacemaking duty. Jeff did very good job, keeping pace very honest for 3.5 laps, clocking about 64 seconds per lap. The main pack at halfway (reached in 4 minutes) was down to five runners: Jeff Hunt, Jeremy Roff, Russel Dessaix-Chin, 17 year old Ryan Gregson and Ben St.Lawrence. Jeff Hunt took the lead in the last kilometre and the pack was down to four runner with Russel Dessaix-Chin losing the contact. Young Ryan Gregson was hanging in fourth position determined to get Australian U18 record of 8:10.52. With 500m to go Jeremy Roff surged trying to win a race with long finish. He made a break but Ben St. Lawrence managed to stay with him and with 270m to go kicked hard and made quite significant gap wich only got bigger towards the end. Ben's time of 7:55.39 is a breakthrough performance and possibly sign of the big thing during this season. Jeremy Roff in second place with under 8 minutes and only 0.2 seconds of his PB. But young Ryan Gregson stole the show with his 8:01.26 for third place and not only did he brake Australian U18 record but also U20 record held by Craig Mottram.
Jeff Hunt came fourth with nearly 10 seconds PB. We shouldn't forget Christopher McDonnald (RBH) who ran under 8:30. What a night? Many PBs and an Australian U18 and U20 records.

2007 Australian Cross Country Championships huge succes

1st September

Big contingent of Randwick Botany Harriers runners went over to Perth for National Cross Country Championships and came back with a swag of medals. The big and pleasant surprise was open man winner Jeff Hunt who had a briliant winter season this year. He will be now concentrating on upcoming Zatopek 10k in December and hopefully World Cross Country next year.

The day started with younger categories and one little runner really dominated his race.
Morgan McDonald (pictured left) was so fast in the 11 years boys race that the announcer in the bush section missed him coming through. His winning time in the 3km event was faster than the winning time in the 12 years boys race and almost good enough for a medal in the u/14 race!

Josh Johnson won a cliffhanger in the u/16 boys 4km race, his first national cross country victory. With only 300m remaining there were still 5 competitors within 3 metres of each other. The gritty Johnson made a long sprint for home and was able to hold off all challenges for a fine win.

Lauren McKillop ran superbly to come 3rd in the highly competitive u/18 girls 4km race. McKillop moved from 5th to 3rd down the final straight with an explosive kick finish. This fine performance augers well for a mighty performance by McKillop at the upcoming world mountain running championships in Switzerland. In the same race Amy Neville came 9th which is her best placing at national cross country.
Other notable performer was Kristy Colman. Kristy Colman came 14th in the u/18 girls 4km race, but was one of the top 16 year olds in the event as well. Colman was chosen in the Australian Schools team to compete in the World Schools Cross country championships in Ostrava in 2008. This is an u/18 event, explaining why current top u/17 runners were chosen.

Harry Summers ran fantastic race and finished 5th in u/18 boys 6km not far behind medal contenders. This boy has so much potential, consistant training will certainly place him among best middle distance juniors in Australia.

Alexis McKillop came 5th in u/20 girls with very solid run, promissing form in the lead-up to track season.

Greta Truscott came 21st and Heidi Kaiser 24th in open woman race.

The open mens 12km race, always a very tough event to win, was a very tight affair. Martin Dent and Jeff Hunt (pictured left) had broken away from the rest of the field by the 8km mark, including breaking Mark Tucker to the point of him dropping out. The Victorian Tucker had beaten everyone in Australia, bar Mottram, throughout the Australian winter. Coming down the final straight, the main image was that of Hunt breaking away from Dent.  The fast finishing Ben St Lawrence, who came from way back,  flashed past Dent with only 120m remaining. Andrew Knox finished in very good 9th place.

Another state title for Jeff Hunt

Saturday 14 July

Jeff Hunt is on the roll this winter. At the NSW short cross country championships, held at Sydney Western Park, Hunt comfortably won 8.5k race with 34 seconds margin ahead of second Ben St Lawrence. Andrew Knox had one of his best runs to claim the third place ahead of NSW 10k (track) champion Glen Guzzo. The course was described as very good by most of the runners, altough muddy and with rolling hills.

Selma Kajan fourth in 800m heats at World Youth Championshipsp in Ostrava

Friday 13 July
In her first race at this competition Selma had to run against the fastest U18 girl in the world Chanelle Price (USA). American produced very fast first lap of 59.26 seconds. Selma was second in low 62 seconds and then
she started to struggle at the back straight and got overtaken by Greek Lefkopoulou Eleni and Croatian Kristina Vilk. Selma tried to respond but as she said felt very "flat". She finished fourth with slow 2:12.78, far from her 2:07.03 that she ran less then 3 weeks ago.
Half of Australian WYC team got sick at their predeparture camp at Goald Coast. Selma's room mate Chloe Tighe didn't manage to recover at all and struggled to finish 1500m in 4:51.

On the positive note, Selma ran very well the following night (14 July) in the relay. The team consisted Jane Larkin (100m), Jacinta Doyle (200m), Olivia Tauro (300m) and Selma Kajan (400m).
First three girls ran really well and Australian team managed to change first before the last leg, closely followed by very strong American team. Selma got overtaken by American (400m hurdles winner Muhammad Dalilah) with 200m to go but didn't let American to make a big gap and Australian team finished only 0.7 seconds behind Americans.
Selma's unofficial split was 55.5.
